  • Summer Update

Phase I of my summer is about to come to an end.

After spending the last 7 weeks in Ann Arbor, it's almost time for me to leave town. Not entirely for good, but i'll probably only be back to pick up my stuff and head to wherever it is i will be going next year (probably MCW barring a Rochester waitlist miracle). On Saturday, i'll be taking the train to Indiana to spend a few weeks with Sunny (Phase II). Seeing as how i only got to see her for a grand total of maybe 8 days this whole year, it'll be nice to be able to spend some time with her before heading to medical school (where time may once again be scarce). We've got some big plans lined up including golf lessons (from me to her), music theory lessons (from her to me), Harry Potter movie marathon leading up to Order of the Phoenix coming out in mid-July, waiting in line at midnight for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on Friday, July 20, a possible trip, actually eating real dinners again (for me...cooking for just me all of last year lead to some unbalanced meals, to say the least), exercise schedules, and a whole queue of Netflix picks. Plus it'll also be nice for me to have a break from responsibility for a bit. I realized recently that I really haven't been without responsibility of some sort (either school, work, or MCAT stuff) since before i started working a summer job the summer after 8th grade. So for a month or so, it'll be good to just be able to chill...because the "responsibility stakes" will go up big time once med school starts.
Anyways, after my time in West Lafayette, i'll be heading back to Syracuse for a couple of weeks as well (Phase III). That'll also be nice as i haven't been home since Christmas PLUS my Dad's family is having a reunion the week i get back and we might (hopefully!) see some of my Mom's side before i have to head out as well.

This first half of my summer turned out a lot better than i had expected, though! I had a lot more hours than i thought at work, meaning more moolah as well as more time in air conditioned buildings! My house is not fun in the summertime, especially my room for some reason. I was also able to get involved with Summacappella, a group composed of members of the Michigan A Cappella community (all 12 groups) who wanted to keep singing over the summer. That's been a pretty sweet experience and allowed me to spend some time with Stu and Ronnie (who i had missed all last year with them moving to Novi) and Sunny (for the few weeks she was back in Michigan). Coupled with singing in church choir, i was able to keep my voice pretty busy!
I also continued to work on a number of gimble projects despite technically being out of the group. Ashley and i did a bunch of mixing for the upcoming CD, leading to some excellent tracks. Even the marathon Hide and Seek session was fun in retrospect now that we have a great final product! I also did an arrangement with Steve and Ashley ("Either Way" by Guster) that sounds great...though it's weird to work on a song that you will never sing. Oh well, hope those guys will like it.

So yeah, time to leave Ann Arbor. It will be sad, of course, but i feel completely ready to move on by now. The last five years at UM have been great...i've made amazing friends, had great times, and learned a lot about a wide variety of subjects. Looking back, i feel as though i've become a much more outgoing and confident person, especially through experiences like Gimble and CIC. But at the same time, while i've had a great summer thus far, i also feel strangely out of place here since i graduated. Not unwelcome per se, but somewhat purposeless. Whenever i'm on campus, i feel like the days when i used to attend classes in those buildings were years ago. Maybe perspective just changes when you know you'll never study there again. In any case, it all simply illustrates that it really is time for me to change it up a bit. I'm more excited than ever to start fresh in a new city for medical school...now if i only knew which city that would be.

  • A few more things...

I know, now it's just getting scary. So much posting!

Anyways, a few more things about my actual life...as I mentioned, my summer has started, meaning back to the grind at CIC. I'm working as much as I possibly can over the next couple of months to make enough money to live and hopefully have some left over to help me move into my new apartment a few months from now. Fortunately, I have a bunch of other stuff going on as well to help keep me busy!

Sunny, as previously mentioned, got back to Michigan yesterday for the next month or so. I will be able to see her every thursday and sunday evening for a) church choir, which I'm starting back up with for the summer, and b) Summacappella, a collections of singers from various UM a cappella groups who sing over the summer due to a lack of anything better to do. I went to the first meeting this past Thursday (with Stu and Ronnie!) and it was a lot of fun...there are a few people who will clearly have the "I need to show you up" personality, but that's cool...for the most part, it'll just be a fun time with a group of good singers!

Also, I'm working the Netflix to the max these days. I upped myself to 3 movies at a time, meaning I'll be able to just about watch one per day if I move through them efficiently. I just finished watching a bunch of the late 2006 Oscar nominated movies (The Queen, Last King of Scotland, Babel, The Prestige, Casino Royale, Children of Men, Dreamgirls) and now I've moved into Season 1 of Deadwood. Over the next two-three weeks, I plan to get through all of Deadwood (seasons 1 and 2), the UK version of "The Office" (only 14 episodes total), and at least 2 seasons of Entourage. After that, I'll probably go back to movies for a while, but I wanted to do a run of some great series that I've missed thus far.

Speaking of TV, I mentioned in a previous post about the upcoming season finales. As I stated, I really don't have any clue where 24 is going to finish up this season. I think that Jack's dad will clearly play a vital role and I will admit that I have questions about Philip's motives at this point...is he literally just a mercenary for hire regardless of what world war he starts, or is there a rhyme or reason to his decisions? I guess we'll find out soon...in any case, I do believe that season 6 has turned itself around in a good way...back when we were just dealing with Jack's family issues and he wasn't kicking nearly enough ass, I was concerned, but that's improved markedly over the past 2 months and I have a good feeling for the last three hours of this season. I'm also very much looking forward to the finale of The Office. Now this I do have theories about...so stop reading SPOILERS! if you haven't watched up until the last episode yet OR if you just don't wanna hear my speculation because some of it may turn out to be right :)

    Stop.

    Ok.

So I'm thinking that the writers could make any of the three candidates for the corporate position work. I definitely think one of them (and not some other random D-M employee from another branch) will get the position and that next season will have a joint focus on Scranton and New York, possibly making David whats-his-face (CEO guy) a bigger character. Anyways, I think that if Michael gets the position (most likely), it'll obviously create a major conflict with Jan being at corporate as well (unless, as some theorists have plotted, they're interviewing for Jan's job, as Jan may be leaving). Although, following through on rumors that someone in the series might get pregnant at some point in time, I think that if Jan ends up pregnant with Michael's baby, it would be a good way to have a joint focus on Scranton (Jim/Karen/Pam/Dwight) and NY (Jan/Michael). My gut feeling is that Michael will have one of his uncharacteristic brilliant moments, wow the top brass, and get the position.
Karen could also end up with the job, and this would most likely be the "Jam" enthusiasts dream come true. Jim and Karen would most likely break up at that point and Jim would head back to Scranton where both he and Pam would be single...hmmm. This would create an environment virtually similar to the first two seasons, which some people might find stale, however. This is probably the solution I'm most hoping for because I feel that Karen adds very little to the overall story plot except to block Jim and Pam from being together (which is the writers' faults, shame on them for underusing what could be a great character!)...also, Rashida Jones' contract might be set to expire as another show she was working on for the fall got picked up. I think chances of Karen landing the job are 50/50, but either way, she won't be as prominent of a character next year.
Jim getting the job strikes me as unlikely. I don't think Jim can sustain a whole storyline by himself in NY without the rest of the supporting cast.Unless some other members end up in NY with him. Who knows. Nevertheless, I think this is the least likely scenario (even though Jim is probably the best candidate for the job) just because of how hard it would be to sustain him as a worthwhile character. Not to mention, there's only so much longer that Jim and Pam can NOT either get together or get over it without it starting to get a bit old.
Unrelated to that storyline, I think that we'll see something huge (either a big reconciliation or a new war starting) between Dwight and Andy (Drew?) and possibly a major plot twist in Kelly/Ryan's lives.
Either way, a positive announcement, NBC recently announced that they will be upping the amount of Office we get next year - 24 episodes with 4 one-hour specials! Not too bad!

OK that's it for now, I promise.

  • Tour 2007! warning...long...

First of all, I know what you're thinking...this guy can barely put up two entries in one semester, but two in 24 hours? No no, I haven't fallen ill or otherwise delusional. I'm just that bored at work. And I had to keep myself awake until 2am last night at the Union, so I might as well fill people in about our awesome tour!

This year's tour started out from our house in Ann Arbor (as usual) with our semester-ly song choosing potluck. It felt really weird for me to be a part of it this year as I was voting on songs that I would never sing. But whatever, them's the perks. Anyways, we decided on a pretty sweet set list (I think) which still allows me to do a joint arrangement of "Either Way" by Guster with the lovely Ms. Talsma and the dashing Mr. Hurvitz. So hopefully we'll be able to finish that up before Steve and I leave town for our respective professional degrees. Anyways.

So we left Sunday evening after SCP finished and headed over to Ashley's house in Troy, MI. As soon as we got there, her family had a glorious dinner prepared of pulled pork sandwiches, corn, baked beans, hot dogs, and potato salad. Woohoo! (By the way, you will eventually begin to notice a culinary trend on this tour...I think we had baked beans like 4 days straight)...anyways, after eating, we put on a short concert for Ash's family, friends, and neighbors in their backyard (a great way to kick off our schedule of performances)! The rest of the night was full of mostly just being lazy...some people watched a movie (That Thing You Do, a movie I personally hate) while the cool people (me) hung out, played guitar (one of the 87 different instruments we found out Young Noh was amazing at), and hung out some more. Everyone went to bed at a reasonable hour as we had an intense schedule of performances the next day.
Highlights: Dodger (the anti-Coda), getting face-fulls of smoke while trying to eat, football, "More Than Words".

Monday morning started around 6am for me as everyone got up fairly early for our day of high school/elementary school sings. After a quick catch with Labe and a bite to eat at the Talsma's, we headed first to sing at Chris' alma mater, East Detroit HS. As would eventually become the trend of the day, these guys loved most of our songs (especially Runaway)! After that gig, we headed back to the West Bloomfield (i think?) area to sing at Carly's high school, Mercy. This was kinda funny. It's an all-girl's HS, which didn't bother me at all until I realized that I needed to go to the bathroom and there were two men's rooms in the whole place. Weird. Anyways, her choir class loved us...too bad we had to dash to make it to our next gig on time! We sped over to Troy HS after that to sing at an assembly for Ashley's old school. We were performing in a gym, so acoustics were a bit lacking, but it was still a fun show. Afterwards, we did a shorter (but better) set exclusively for the choir class. They were definitely a better audience :) Then, for our last gig of the day (pretty busy, right?), we went to Ash's elementary school (Leonard maybe?) a few blocks from her house and sang at a 3rd-grade wide assembly. Performing for the little kids is the best. We asked afterwards if they had questions and about half of them (about 80 kids) wanted to ask us stuff, including one awesome kid who asked us to do the Michigan fight song. His friend hated it (he was wearing an MSU shirt...haha). Anyways, after that long day of singing, we headed back to Ashley's house to pack cars, grab a bite of pizza, and head out towards Charleston, WV. Now, we really had no business in Charleston...it was just a convenient stopping point along the way for us. Nevertheless, it quickly became quite maddening. First of all, the AAA directions took us through all of these side streets (like Erie Blvd type roads)...there HAD to be a faster way. Anyways, once we got there, a small mixup in a street name caused us to end up about 15 miles south of where we should have been. At midnight. After driving for about 7.5 hours already. No fun. When we finally did find our hotel, some people wanted to stay up to celebrate Kevin's 21st birthday. I hung out for a bit, but quickly decided that I wasn't gonna make it much longer and went to bed (without even eating dinner!).
Highlights: Dashing to every single gig to make it on time, Runaway choreo a hit!, Leonard Elementary spirit song (they love their diversity), a rather inappropriate car game involving a certain article of clothing and highway billboards, Alli: "Drew, just roll down the window and duck", MacCorkle Rd, Happy 21st Kev (and shotgunning Miller Lites in Room 104).

Tuesday morning started around 10am with a trip to IHOP across the street before hopping right back into the cars and heading for Gatlinburg, TN, a small tourist city outside of Knoxville. We were staying at a cabin which belonged to a friend of Kevin's aunt. When we got there (after a gorgeous car trip through the Smoky mountains), we quickly realized that this was going to be an awesome stop. The cabin was great, the perfect size for the 15 of us (well, given our tour mentality that sleeping on the floor was perfectly acceptable) with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a kitchen and family room with a sprawling porch and a hot tub! Soon after we got there, however, most of the group decided to change and head for the Smoky Mountain National Park for a hike in the mountains. I rode over with Ashley with Alex's car right behind. Whitney was leading the way in the Suburban. When we came to what we thought was the right place to stop (after getting lost, stopping to ask for directions, and doing about 35 donuts in the parking lot while the other car asked directions), Alex and Ashley parked their cars while Whitney kept right on going to the ACTUAL parking lot. So whatever...we got to hike even farther. After about 1.5 miles, we reached the real parking lot and found a note on Whit's car telling us to meet them along the way to the waterfall (our ultimate destination). We found them along the way as they were headed back...Whitney nicely agreed to come back for us so that we wouldn't have to walk all the way back to our cars (which turned out to be HUGE because, if that hadn't have happened, we would've been walking through the park in the pitch black). Anyways, we found our way to the waterfall and hung out and took a bunch of great pictures before heading back to the parking lot (along the way, we found lots of great views of the sunset, too)! Once we finally got back home, Vonnie (Kev's aunt) had prepared a lovely dinner of pulled pork, baked beans, and cheesy potatoes (sound familiar?) followed by smores and a dip in the hot tub (which allowed for amazing music due to the gazebo-style roof providing stellar acoustics) before we started playing Mafia (another trend of tour). We finally went to bed around 2:30am.
Highlights: Coffee and Kaluha for Kev, #1 with rye toast, driving the car while Ashley fixed her skirt, Tennessee Smokies baseball, hiking trails being uphill the whole way (i SWEAR!), Whitney running across a mother bear with its cub, Hide and Seek in the hot tub, Laura's AMAZING game of Mafia, sleeping quite comfortably on a hardwood floor.

The next morning, Wednesday, we woke up around 10, ate an amazing breakfast again prepared from scratch by Vonnie, and packed up and headed out for Nashville. We arrived around 5pm, checked in to the hotel, and headed right back downtown. Once we got there, we found an awesome bar which had pork sandwiches, baked beans (sound familiar?) and, an element that ended up being a spot of trouble, 2-for-1 night on all beers. So everyone got a little buzzed at dinner before we headed further downtown to try to find a bar that we could all get in to. Eventually, we found an excellent karaoke bar where we hung out, drank, and sang for hours. At one point in time, all gimble girls were dancing on top of the bar. They should've paid us for increasing their business that night. Interestingly, I had a great time myself even though I really didn't drink anything (after dinner anyways) and, more importantly, I actually enjoyed the country music. Usually I'm not a big fan, but I guess when you're in Nashville, it just makes sense! Afterwards, we gradually made it back to the hotel where most people hit the sack pretty early :)
Highlights: Group picture outside the cabin, getting lost AGAIN in Gatlinburg, more car games, football at Motel 6, Chris' cowboy hat, about 40 bottles of Bud between the 10 of us that drank, MITCH SILVER, "meow", "KIM-BER-LY!", gimble girls performing "Jump!", many wildly inappropriate times, my friend Alli :)

On Thursday, we all took a little while to actually wake up and get moving, but eventually we got in the car and headed for Lousiville, KY. We got there around 3:30pm, just in time to relax for a bit before heading back out to Kev's mom's antique store, where we had a gig for Kev's family and friends at 5:30. We went down to see the horses and played with the dogs. We got to the antique store a little early so that people who hadn't visited last time we were in Louisville on tour could look around. The place is gorgeous with lots of amazing pieces. The gig went well too, and a whole lot of people ended up buying our CDs, which was great for the group! After the gig, we headed back to the farm for an amazing dinner of hot dogs and baked beans (sound familiar?) followed by not one, but two delicious cakes for Kev's bday. The group then decided to hang out for a bit before getting some serious games of Mafia going. I don't know what it was about this tour, but (for the most part) the Mafia was great. My interest in that game was only really strong during my freshman orientation, but something about playing with this group was really fun. We played a bunch of good games and didn't go to bed until quite late.
Highlights: Jack-in-the-Box macaroni and cheese bites, car dinosaur!!, "If I was a goat farmer, I'd probably be going to hell, too!" <--an old farmer after we sang "Sheep Go To Heaven, Goats Go To Hell" by Cake, Chris and Emily are ALWAYS mafia.

On Friday we spent all day in Louisville. The original plan was to try to get up and go to the Oaks, but the weather was not very cooperative and only a few truly interested people ended up braving the rain to watch the races from the infield. Although we did manage to get our helpings of sausage and grits! On a sad note, Kate left tour in the morning to get home in time for her Mom's birthday. It was sad to see a member go early, especially one I knew I wouldn't see all summer (and, therefore, for quite some time), but sometimes that's how it is on tour I guess. Anyways, those of us who didn't go woke up lazily, showered, and played a few games of Euchre before really getting a plan going. We decided to head to downtown Louisville and break up when we got there...some went to the shopping area to see what was available, while another group (myself included) took a tour of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat factory. It was awesome to see how they make all of the bats! We all left with free mini-bat souveniers and took some swings in the batting cages with wooden bats! After wandering downtown a bit more, we met back up and headed back to the farm for a pasta dinner (I know, where's the baked beans?!?). On a sad note, we never ended up being able to take a hayride because of the weather...fortunately I had already taken one on a previous tour, but it still would've been nice! This also meant not weenie roasting/smore making/bonfire singing... :( Another game night ensued including Euchre, Texas Hold 'Em poker, (Yankees giving up 15 runs to the Mariners), more Mafia (of course), and a very interesting game of Minus Dare Plus Truth. We didn't end up going to bed til about 3:30am on Friday, which was all the more difficult because we knew how early we needed to get up...
Highlights: EUUUCHRE!, pink bats, Young Noh awesome in the cages, Whitney's awesome present, Labe and Young Noh awesome at poker, stealing extra chips, "Explode the Bomb!", gimble memories in MDPT, convo w/ Laura.

When I say we needed to get up early, I did not mean to get going as a group. A few of us wanted to get up particularly early as Kev's dad had invited us to come down and watch the cow milking process. So we were up again at 5:45am to head over to the barn. Turns out, milking cows is a pretty dirty job. We were there for about 10 minutes and needed to wipe off our shoes and store our dirty clothes in plastic bags for the rest of tour because of all the manure we got on them. Oh well. It was actually pretty cool to watch, and we got to see the baby calves as well. We all went back to sleep for a couple of hours after we got back until everyone got up and we packed the cars and headed for West Lafayette. Derby traffic was non-existent, which was nice, so we made it to Sunny's apartment by about 3:30. Once we got there, people did their own things...some went to work out, some went for a run, some (myself included) went outside to have a catch of football...which turned into about and hour and a half of throwing. By the time we were done, my shoulder was making a clicking sound every time I threw...it was pretty sore the next morning, too. So we all came in and ate our last amazing dinner of tour (lasagna, garlic bread, and salad courtesy of Sun) while watching Street Sense's first Kentucky Derby victory by a favorite in quite some time. Afterwards, we warmed up and headed down to campus for our gig at a small coffee shop at Purdue. It was a nice final gig, not too crowded, but the crowd (which consisted largely of friends of Sunny, Kevin, and Young Noh) was very into our performance and we even managed to sell a few more CDs! Following the gig, Kev and Young Noh went off to chill with their friends for a bit while the rest of us took a quick tour of Purdue's campus, getting some nice pictures by the big fountain. We also stopped by Ollie's for frozen custard on the way back home. Once we got home and rejoined Kev and YN, we played a few games of telephone charades, which is always good for a laugh. After that, we did a few more games of Mafia (just because at this point), some MDPT, followed by an interesting glimpse into our members' psyche with "would you rather"...that game lasted laaaaaate into the night (broke up around 5am I heard), although I drifted off around 4am.
Highlights: Broadway car trip, Dana's got a gun for an arm, Imawildandcrazyguy last to 4th place, last (g) gig ever, ear wax or vomit?

We all ended up waking up around 9am on Sunday to say goodbye to the early car people. Again, I thought this was where I would lose it, but there were so few people there that I wouldn't see at some point throughout the summer that it just didn't really feel final yet. So yeah, they took off and the rest of us woke up, ate breakfast casserole, and watched Ferris Bueller until we decided to get moving as well. After goodbyes to Alex's car, we hopped in Ashley's car and headed back to my place. After a fun car trip involving text message wars with the other car and hilarious rounds of "would you rather" and a lunch stop at Steak n' Shake, we got back to AA around 5pm. Everyone just kinda hung around, quite exhausted, for a while before we all decided to meet back up and see Spiderman 3...movie was pretty bad, but it's always nice to spend more time with gimble immediately following tour...kind of a weaning process in a way. So yeah, Dana and Embly stayed at our house that night, too, but we all went to bed pretty quickly.
Highlights: Two vats..., Arms and Sheep, Embly hiding in her shirt, oily fries, Labe almost walking out of Spiderman

So there ya go, Tour 2007, my final tour, in the books. It was a great time and one that will not soon be forgotten. Fortunately, I still get to see a number of these people over the next couple of months before I head to med school, and the ones who won't be around, I'll still manage to see as I've made it a point to try my hardest to get back to AA for at least one football game and both concerts next semester...we'll see!
